Patrick Vieira appointed Senegal coach to lead Teranga Lions’ AFCON charge

Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national team, with the former France and Arsenal midfielder taking charge of the Lions of Teranga in a new era for Senegalese football.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday through its official X account, following the departure of Pape Thiaw and his technical staff.

“Patrick Vieira has become the new coach of the Senegal senior national team. The date of his official presentation and the next steps in his appointment process will be announced later. Welcome to Senegal,” the FSF said.

Vieira replaces Thiaw

Vieira takes over from Thiaw, who was relieved of his duties following Senegal’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Thiaw led Senegal to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, but his tenure was later overshadowed by controversy after the team walked off during the final following a disputed refereeing decision. Senegal were subsequently stripped of the title, which was awarded to Morocco.

At the 2026 World Cup, Senegal reached the round of 16 before suffering a defeat to Belgium, a result that drew heavy criticism from the country’s media and raised questions over the team’s direction.
