Nigerian Doctor Oluebube Okoye Bags Prestigious USA Healthcare Award After Starting Medical Career Again in America

A Nigerian doctor, Dr. Oluebube Miracle Okoye, has earned international recognition after being named one of just nine recipients of the Spring 2026 First Practice Fund in the United States.

The scholarship, awarded by PracticeLink, comes with a $2,500 award and recognises medical trainees who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving healthcare access, particularly for underserved communities.

But beyond the award itself, Dr. Okoye’s journey to this point is one that has caught attention.

Before relocating to the United States, the Nigerian physician had already earned his medical degree from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Medical College, completed two years of paediatric residency training in Nigeria and founded Good Shepherd Mirest Hospital, a facility established to provide healthcare to communities where access to quality medical care remains a challenge.

Then came one of the biggest decisions of his professional life.

After moving to the United States and matching into paediatric residency at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Dr. Okoye had to start his medical training again, this time as an intern.

In Nigeria, he had already gained experience treating sick children and making clinical decisions at the bedside. But in America, none of that automatically translated into seniority.

He had to learn a completely new healthcare system, electronic medical records, referral processes and the working culture of a new hospital.

For him, it meant starting over without actually starting from zero.

Speaking about the experience, Dr. Okoye said the challenge was not necessarily knowing medicine, but having to work in a system that did not yet know what he was capable of.
