There’s a specific kind of loneliness that comes from being in a room and not knowing how to fill it. Westside Cowboy, the project of British singer-songwriter and producer Jesse Wright, captures that feeling on “Dobro.” The track is the first single from his debut album, It Goes On, which arrived August 7 via Universal Music Operations.

The song takes its title from the resonator guitar, an instrument known for its metallic, haunting twang . But the lyrics don’t mention the instrument. They describe a “Dobro on the stairs” who “wishes he had two hind legs.” It’s an image of a creature caught between forms, stuck in a room it can’t fully inhabit. The narrator is watching from a window, and the distance is the point . “I’ve got nothing left to say to you.”

The production, handled by Loren Humphrey, is stripped back, letting the lyrics sit at the center. The song moves from a dobro on the stairs to a man on the street to a narrator sitting on the edge of his bed, each verse adding another layer of absence. “Wondering where they went” is the song’s quiet refrain, a question that doesn’t need an answer. It Goes On was written by Wright and Dominic Bastyra, and recorded by Oli Barton-Wood at All Saints Chapel in London. The song captures the feeling of waiting for someone to come back, with a chorus that asks simply “If you care, please come home”—a plea that hangs in the silence. The album’s cover art was shot by Luke Gray.
