FG reaffirms commitment to accountability in public financial management

THE Federal Government has reaffirmed commitment to accountability, transparency in public financial management and improve Nigeria procurement system in boosting public and investors confidence.

Speaking, on Thursday in Abuja, at the Economic Confidential Lecture on Anti-corruption reforms, Economic stability and Effective communication, Minister of information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said economic stability is difficult where corruption weakens institutions, distorts public expenditure and erodes confidence.

“Equally, even the most necessary reforms cannot command public understanding and support if they are not communicated clearly and credibly,” Idris said.

He explained that the government is implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, improving transparency and accountability, restoring investor confidence and ensuring that public resources deliver greater value to Nigerians.

“But the fight against corruption must go beyond arrests and prosecutions. It must also focus on strengthening systems and institutions to prevent abuse.

“This is why the increasing digitalisation of government processes, greater transparency in public financial management, improved procurement systems and the reduction of discretionary bottlenecks are important.

“The objective must be to build institutions in which accountability is embedded in the system rather than dependent solely on individuals.

“At the same time, reforms succeed when citizens understand and trust the process. Nigerians deserve to know what government is doing, why difficult decisions are necessary, and how those decisions will ultimately improve their live” the minister stated.
