For decades, financial institutions have marginalized the beauty industry, often reducing it to “just makeup.” This dismissal overlooks a profound reality: behind every lipstick shade and serum lies a multi-billion-dollar economic powerhouse. In Africa alone, the beauty and personal care market is surging, projected to grow by over $8 billion between 2024 and 2028. Yet, despite these staggering figures, true inclusivity is still frequently treated as a fleeting trend rather than a fundamental driver of innovation.
As a Medical Laboratory Scientist turned beauty founder, I realized early on that changing this narrative required more than just expanding foundation shades. It required rigorous science, technology, and a deep, uncompromising understanding of the people we serve.
The Science of Melanated Skin
My background in laboratory science fundamentally shaped my approach to product development. Science teaches you to investigate problems, understand biological processes, interpret data, and develop evidence-based solutions rather than relying on assumptions.
Historically, African skin has been underserved because too many formulations are simply adapted from research conducted on other skin types, entirely ignoring the unique characteristics of melanin-rich skin. Take hyperpigmentation, for example. Studies show that over 65% of people of African descent experience hyperpigmentation, making it one of the leading dermatological complaints in our community. Yet, many mainstream products either fail to address it effectively or use aggressive lightening agents that damage the skin barrier and trigger even more pigmentation.
