Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly closing in on a deal to acquire a significant minority stake in Premier League giants Liverpool as part of a consortium led by businessman Amit Bhatia.

The investment group, which also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, is understood to be in advanced talks with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s controlling owner. Reports indicate that the consortium could acquire roughly one-third of the club, with an announcement potentially coming as early as this week.

If completed, the proposed transaction could value Liverpool at around £4.4 billion ($5.9 billion), making it one of the highest valuations ever recorded for a football club. FSG, which bought Liverpool in 2010, is expected to retain control despite the proposed investment.

Bhatia, who previously held a stake in Championship club Queens Park Rangers, is leading the consortium. The proposed deal would also mark a major entry into football ownership for Bezos, whose involvement would add one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen to Liverpool’s ownership structure.

FSG has previously welcomed outside investment in the club, including the sale of a minority stake to Dynasty Equity in 2023. However, the latest proposal would represent a significantly larger investment and could further strengthen Liverpool’s financial position as the club continues to compete at the highest level.

Neither Liverpool nor FSG has officially confirmed that the transaction has been completed, with talks reportedly still ongoing.
