The Federal Government is targeting reliable 24-hour electricity for at least 30% health facilities across Nigeria by the end of 2027, as it accelerates implementation of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI).
The target was reaffirmed at the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee (IMSC) on the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, jointly chaired by Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, and Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, Minister of Power.
The meeting approved a series of measures aimed at strengthening governance, accelerating implementation and expanding access to reliable and sustainable electricity across healthcare facilities.
Established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025, the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative is a joint programme of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Power designed to address electricity challenges affecting healthcare delivery.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) to strengthen health-system governance, mobilise strategic partnerships and improve health outcomes through coordinated interventions.
“The Federal Government is deliberately strengthening the governance, partnerships and delivery systems required to expand healthcare electrification nationwide,” Salako said in a statement seen by Technology Times.
