Are You Prepared To Be Fired? The Wake-Up Call Nobody Wants to Hear

If you’ve been paying attention to the headlines lately, you’ve seen the pattern. Layoffs have become a regular part of the news cycle. Major corporations are downsizing. Government agencies are restructuring. Entire departments are being eliminated. Employees who thought they had secure careers are finding themselves unexpectedly updating résumés, filing for unemployment, and wondering what comes next.

Not long ago, the idea of spending twenty or thirty years with the same employer seemed realistic. A stable job, a pension, and a predictable path to retirement were considered the norm. Today, that reality is becoming increasingly rare. The employment landscape has changed, and many people are still operating as if it hasn’t. So, here’s the question nobody likes to ask:

Are you prepared to be fired?

Not because you’re doing a bad job. Not because you’re underperforming. Not because you’ve done anything wrong. But because in today’s economy, job loss is often less about performance and more about business decisions. Companies merge. Budgets shrink. Funding gets cut. Technology evolves. Positions become obsolete. Entire divisions disappear overnight. Sometimes the decision has absolutely nothing to do with the employee. The people who were laid off from government positions during recent workforce reductions didn’t expect it. Employees at major corporations such as Amazon, Verizon, and ESPN likely didn’t wake up that morning anticipating a phone call, an email, or a meeting invitation that would change everything. Yet it happened.

And it continues to happen every day.
