A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling has shifted the lives of thousands of Haitian immigrants after their legal status was revoked by the Trump administration, which decided to end Temporary Protective Status (TPS). Since the decision was made, Haitian immigrants were instructed to visit Ohio’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Springfield after receiving call-in letters in late July to formally report their citizenship status and receive updates on next steps.
Tensions began to rise when people were excused from their jobs after their work permits were seen as invalid, and questions of safety began to arise as potential deportations loomed overhead. The determination of deportation is based on private appointments and the review of specific circumstances per person. Guidelines for determining this are tied to whether someone has a pending non-TPS citizenship application, separate independent legal status, or a removal order in place. According to NBC4 based out of Ohio, ankle monitors were distributed to those who attended these in-person meetings at the ICE facility, but it is unclear how long they may have to wear the accessory as they await the determination of their cases.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, immigrants were given the option to leave the United States with $2,600 and free airfare or go up against legal proceedings for their individual case and legal tracking. They are not allowed to go outside of a 75-mile radius from their home address, per orders from ICE officials. To travel outside of the mileage restriction, they must contact an ICE caseworker for approval. To date, approximately 30,000 Haitians lived with TPS in the state of Ohio alone, with 12,000-15,000 being accounted for by the city of Springfield as reported by Ohio Capital Journal.
