Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur, Kunle Afolayan, has called on the government to support his film village after investing more than N8bn of his personal funds in the facility.
Afolayan said the lack of electricity at KAP Village had placed a heavy financial burden on the resort, forcing him to depend on diesel to keep its operations running.
He made the disclosure during an interview with former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on the Nidacity podcast, which was released on YouTube on Tuesday.
According to the filmmaker, the cost of diesel has become so high that sustaining the resort’s operations through generators is increasingly difficult.
“I believe so much in this country. We haven’t had electricity in KAP Village since the beginning. So we’ve been running on diesel. I did a post a few months ago that I cannot be like, we can’t sustain this diesel thing. We’re going to close the resort, but then there is another friend who said I will sell diesel to you on credit and I’m like It’s still not sustainable,” Afolayan said.
He said efforts were now underway to adopt green energy as an alternative, noting that about N200m had already been spent on a renewable energy project.
However, Afolayan said the investment was not sufficient to supply power to the entire resort.
“So right now we’re talking to a lot of people to try and see how to do green energy. We did one last year, which cost about N200m, but it’s not enough to power the entire resort, he said.
The filmmaker said the scale of his investment warranted assistance from government agencies, particularly as he had financed the development largely from his personal resources.
“And if we’ve managed to do that, I think there should be some sort of support, like from government agencies,” he said.
