How Flowers Are Changing the Customs Headquarters

Inside the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Headquarters in Abuja, where uniforms, official files and the steady rhythm of administrative work usually define the atmosphere, something softer is beginning to take root.

Flowers now occupy carefully chosen spaces, adding colour and a touch of nature to offices and areas that have traditionally been dominated by the formal character of government work. The change may appear modest at first glance, but it reflects a growing appreciation that the places where people work can influence how they feel and perform.

At Customs, the flowers are becoming part of a conversation about creating a workplace that feels more welcoming, relaxed and humane. The idea rests on a simple thought: people do not switch off their emotions when they walk into an office.

A stressful or monotonous environment can shape the mood of personnel, just as a pleasant and thoughtfully arranged space can create a different psychological experience. For officers who spend long hours handling responsibilities that require concentration, discipline and efficiency, small touches of nature can provide a welcome visual relief.

It is this connection between the physical environment and the wellbeing of personnel that has inspired the floral initiative at the Customs Headquarters.

The latest phase of the initiative took place on Monday, 31 August 2026, when the Comptroller of Administration, Human Resources Department, Ditan Tiyatiye, presented carefully curated floral arrangements to the office of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
