Toni Rudiger retires from international football

Toni Rudiger is another player who has announced his retirement from international football in his latest post on social media.

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, bringing an end to a 12-year international career with Germany.

Rüdiger made his senior debut for Germany in 2014 and went on to earn 86 caps for the national team. During his time with Die Mannschaft, he featured at several major international tournaments and became one of the team’s most experienced defenders.

Explaining his decision, Rüdiger said he had taken time to reflect before deciding that it was the right moment to step away and allow younger players to take his place.

“After taking some time to reflect, I feel the time has come for me to end my career with the national team and make way for the younger generation,” he said.

The Real Madrid centre-back admitted that Germany’s failure to win a major international trophy during his time with the national team, along with several difficult defeats, made the journey challenging. However, he described his years with Germany as a special chapter in his career.

Rüdiger also expressed his gratitude to his teammates, coaches and supporters for their backing throughout his international career.

“A new chapter now begins for me, in which I will focus fully on my club,” Rüdiger added. “Thank you for sharing this journey with me.”

Rüdiger will now turn his attention exclusively to his club career at Real Madrid after closing the international chapter of his football journey.
