Shina Philips, the founder and president of the Nigeria Pitch Awards, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s reforms of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), describing the intervention as a timely opportunity to address the structural challenges confronting Nigerian football.

Philips, in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for initiating what he described as long-awaited reforms of the country’s football administration.

‘Reforms will expose football’s challenges’
Philips said the reform process would provide an opportunity to identify the major weaknesses within Nigerian football and highlight areas requiring greater government support and intervention.
“The reforms initiated by President Tinubu and the National Sports Commission will highlight the challenges facing our football and draw the much-needed intervention or support from the presidency,” Philips said.

He described the intervention as a bold attempt to confront the perceived decline in Nigerian football, expressing confidence that the process could lay the foundation for a stronger, more vibrant and sustainable football system.
According to him, the strategic importance of football and its enormous following across the country make it an area that government cannot afford to neglect.
