A woman in Abuja has cried out after her family’s house and belongings were allegedly demolished in less than 30 minutes, claiming they were given only 72 hours to vacate the property.
According to the woman, the demolition left her struggling to process the loss, as the authorities allegedly did not give residents enough time to retrieve their belongings or establish whether anyone was still inside the building.
“I Watched Helplessly As Our House And Properties In It Was Demolished In Less Than 30 Minutes. I’m Yet To Process It. We Were Only Given 72 Hours To Leave. How Heartless Can This Government Be? They Didn’t Even Stop To Ask If There Were Still People Inside. They Didn’t Give People Enough Time To Collect Their Belongings. They Just Came And Started Destroying People’s Homes. If This Were a Reasonable, Functioning System, If You’re Going To Demolish People’s Homes And Displace Them, There Should At Least Be a Plan For What Happens To Those People Afterwards Even If It’s Just a Temporary Place To Stay.”
The woman also questioned what would happen to residents displaced by the demolition, arguing that there should be a temporary housing plan for affected families.
Her account has sparked reactions online, with some Nigerians expressing sympathy while others turned the discussion into a debate over politics and the government’s handling of demolitions in Abuja.
