Loving fashion does not mean you have to participate in every trend that comes along. By now, you probably know the difference between something that genuinely suits you and something you only want because you have seen it twenty times on Instagram.

That does not mean fashion has to become predictable. Trends are fun. They can refresh a wardrobe, introduce you to a silhouette you never considered and occasionally bring back something you wish you had kept the first time around. The grown-woman approach is simply to be more selective about which ones make the cut.

Start With Your Personal Style

Before buying anything trending, look at what you already wear. If your wardrobe is mostly clean tailoring and neutrals, you probably don’t need to suddenly become a maximalist just because prints are having a moment.

The best trends fit naturally into your existing style. A new colour, silhouette or accessory should feel like an update, not a costume. You should still recognise yourself when you look in the mirror.

Ask Yourself If You Actually Like It

There is a difference between liking something and becoming accustomed to seeing it.

Social media can make almost anything look desirable after enough repetition. Suddenly the shoe you thought was strange three weeks ago is sitting in your shopping cart.

Before buying, imagine the trend without the hype. Would you still want it if your favourite celebrities and influencers stopped wearing it tomorrow? If the answer is no, leave it.

Don’t Wear Every Trend at Once

This is where many otherwise good outfits go wrong. Trending jeans, viral sunglasses, statement shoes, an oversized jacket, and the latest It bag don’t necessarily need to match.
