Slow Pulp are a band that builds their songs around the quiet moments, and “Spill” is one of their most vulnerable. It’s the final single from their upcoming third album, Melodie, out September 18 via ANTI- . The song, which features a video, was actually the first piece written for their acclaimed 2023 album Yard, but it never quite found its place until producer Elliot Kozel came on board for the new project .
The track opens with a steady snap of drums and light strumming that sets a foundation for vocalist Emily Massey’s voice to drift into the picture . Massey divided lyric-writing duties on the album with guitarist Henry Stoehr, who wrote five of its songs . The collaboration with Kozel, whose credits include Rosalía and Björk, pushed the band beyond their comfort zone, allowing them to let go of some control and create a record that balances “power-pop euphoria, acoustic heartbreak, and the ocean of sound between them” .

“Spill” captures a familiar modern anxiety: being too afraid to say “I love you” too soon, but also too afraid to say it too late . It’s a track about the delicate dance of casual relationships, where the fear of rejection builds a barrier to expressing real love . The video, which premiered alongside the single, matches the song’s muted texture with dreamy, lo-fi visuals that capture a state of emotional limbo .
