Recent research indicates that hair and beauty products marketed to black women contain toxic chemicals linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, as well as fueling the spread of cancer cells.
At the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Atlanta on June 12, researchers examined how parabens affected breast cancer cells in black and white women. In another study conducted by the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, it was indicated that parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, resulting in dangerous cell growth in humans.
Parabens are compounds widely used as preservatives due to their antimicrobial properties. In beauty products, parabens prevent the growth of mold and bacteria and yeast thereby extending their shelf life.
Parabens are referred to as endocrine disruptors due to their endocrine disruptor chemical (ECDC) which is not only linked to breast cancer but fuels its spread which is of concern to black women.
When analyzing the effects of parabens samples were collected and tested. The study found that black women were more likely to buy products with parabens in them.
Furthermore, it was also found that fewer paraben-free products were marketed to black women such as hair creams, relaxers, and stylers which contained the most parabens. This was different for white women who got more paraben-free options sold to them.
Lead researcher Lindsey.S.Trevino, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Health Equities and Department of Population Science at City of Hope said:
