NGX Invest: The opportunity to democratise Africa’s largest IPO

The anticipated listing of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is shaping up to be the largest and most consequential capital market transaction in African history.

Though no specific date has been formally approved for Initial Public Offering (IPO), but the company continues to target a September date after approaching the Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in July to begin the process for what is expected to become Africa’s largest stock market listing.

Emomotimi Agama, director general, SEC said that the regulator does not anticipate delays that could derail the planned share sale. “If any issue arises, SEC will resolve it. That is why SEC exists,” Agama said.

Dangote Refinery IPO would rank among the continent’s biggest equity offerings and represent the most significant addition to Nigeria’s capital market in years, following repeated calls by regulators for large private companies to deepen the country’s equity market through public listings.

Beyond its size, however, the offering may become the defining test of whether Nigeria’s capital market has developed the infrastructure required to democratise ownership of transformational industrial assets at scale.

Billionaire founder Aliko Dangote has repeatedly emphasised that the primary listing is intended to democratise wealth creation and ensure that Nigerian and African retail investors can directly own a stake in the continent’s largest industrial asset.
