Actress and comedian Sheryl Underwood proved this on national television the other day when she revealed her natural hair and issued an apology to the black community for the offensive comment she made a few years ago.

In 2013, Underwood made a remark about former super model Heidi Klum’s bi-racial kids’ naturally curly hair. When it was mentioned that Klum’s saves her children’s hair after every haircut, Underwood laughed and said that ‘Afro hair is nothing to save’.

Two years later, and Underwood has apologized again for her hurtful statements. She also took off her wig* on CBS’s The Talk to reveal her natural hair. Sheryl spent time explaining her feelings and thoughts after reading comments online about her statement. She acknowledged how hurtful her words were to the black community, where hair is a sensitive topic.

“To come out of the mouth of a very proud black woman—I was wrong. I wanted to take the time to apologize, especially in the forum that this discussion occurred,”

In addition to her verbal apology, she also had Judy Chen read a portion of her written statement:

“I want to apologize for my recent attempt at humor that missed the target and hit my people squarely in the heart. To all of you, I say I’m very sorry for my failed attempt at humor surrounding something that is very sensitive to us, our hair.”
