Kwara: Rescued kidnap victims recount ordeal

The rescued victims of the Woro community abduction in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have narrated their harrowing experiences during six months in captivity, revealing that several children died while in the terrorists’ camp.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Friday during their official handover to the Kwara State Government following their rescue by security forces, one of the victims said several children died in the camp due to the harsh conditions.

She, however, said that only about half of the babies survived.

Ameerah, who said she is a professional nurse, added that she assisted in delivering babies without gloves.

She also said 13 children died in the camp as a result of the harsh conditions, while some young women were married off and a number of young men eventually joined the terrorists.

Also narrating her experience, a health worker, Ameerah Saliu, who said she assisted in delivering 12 pregnant women while in captivity, added that none of the women was sexually molested.

Ameerah, however, said they were subjected to severe hunger and deprivation throughout their stay in the camp.

She added that throughout their captivity, they lived on sorghum (guinea corn) meal, cooking their soup with only salt and seasoning (Maggi).

“They told us that they attacked our community because the village head disallowed them from preaching their perverted religion in the community.

“We were staying very close to a river. Anytime aeroplanes hovered overhead, they would tell us to run for cover.

“All through, they would bring powdered sorghum, salt and Maggi. No pepper, no oil. Sometimes, we would sleep on an empty stomach with our children,” she added.
