I want to talk about something deeply personal today, something that many of you will face or have faced at some point. My aunt, who is like a second mother to me, is in hospice care. My uncle has chosen to take her home. Watching her transition to the Ancestor Realm is a profound experience. Her skin remains flawless, soft, radiant, and smooth. And yet, those of us around her, shouldering the weight of emotions, are experiencing breakouts, dullness, and ashy skin.
This contrast made me stop and ask …. Why is stress showing up so clearly on our skin? And more importantly, how do we care for ourselves in these moments when we feel like we have nothing left to give? How Stress Shows Up on Your Skin
Stress isn’t just something we feel, it manifests physically, often in our skin. For melanin-rich complexions, this can mean:
- Breakouts & Hyperpigmentation – Stress increases cortisol levels, which triggers excess oil production and inflammation. For those of us with deeper skin tones, inflammation often leads to hyperpigmentation, meaning those breakouts leave behind dark marks that linger.
- Dryness & Ashy Skin – Grief and stress can make us neglect our hydration, causing our skin to loose moisture. Add in the lack of sleep and emotional exhaustion, and it’s no wonder our skin appears dull and lifeless.
